The man Mr. Garland tapped for the job, Robert K. Hur, has not been quite as cautious. On Thursday, Mr. Hur, 50, a former Justice Department official in the Trump administration, dropped a 345-page political bomb into the middle of the 2024 campaign, the final report summing up his investigation. The Hur report underlines the challenges of deploying special counsels, which are intended to shield prosecutors from political meddling, but often result in the release of negative information about high-profile targets who have been cleared of criminal wrongdoing. It also showed the complicated balance of the job — navigating a polarized environment that leaves little option but to expansively explain the rationale for any decision. Mr. Hur is no stranger to high-wire investigations and legal conflict.

Higher interest rates are proving a boon to U.K. defined-benefit pension plans, while causing a headache for many of the private-equity firms that manage money for the systems. The steady increase in U.K. interest rates since the start of last year has resulted in improved funding ratios for the plans that comprise this $1.67 trillion pool of capital, allowing them to move money out of buyout- and venture-capital funds and into less-risky assets, according to several pension system managers and consultants. California Public Employees’ Retirement System ratcheted up its scrutiny of private-equity manager Blackstone in the wake of a child labor scandal at a company the firm owns. During a Tuesday investment committee meeting, Anton Orlich, managing investment director for private equity, said Calpers had demanded that representatives of Blackstone come to the pension’s Sacramento headquarters to discuss how the breach at Packers Sanitation Services happened.

"I never saw myself as a speaker, let alone a motivational speaker," Leonard tells me while his assistant irons his jeans. 'When I ramble," Hunter told me, "hit me in the leg!" Every plane had been grounded, including the one stuck on the tarmac with an increasingly inebriated Hunter Thompson trapped inside. But by far the most all-consuming task was booking gigs for Hunter Thompson. Just before a debate with G. Gordon Liddy at Brown University, Hunter demanded that Betsy Berg, whom I now worked alongside at GTN, score him some crystal meth.

Pension Funds Struggle to Gauge Crypto Exposure

Public pensions in the U.S. have mostly shied away from digital assets, a sector whose Wild West ethos and extreme volatility are widely seen as bad fits for institutional investors that aim to protect retiree savings. Yet many pensions have millions of dollars in exposure to the cryptocurrency asset class through investments in venture-capital funds that backed crypto companies.
